11:52 am - Arolos Rankers Badly Needed!
|
Please DO NOT reply to this message onlist. Send replies to fishypoo@ ureach.com without the space.
Y'all may or may not've noticed, but there are a lot of dragonriders in Arolos.
*pauses for gasps of shock to die down*
There are so many, in fact, that our five PC wings are now holding between 46 and 48 riders each, with the theoretical maximum 33. Soooooooooooo, we need new Wings-- at least three, perhaps four. And that means we need new Wing rankers.
We are looking for nominations and volunteers for Wingleaders, Wingseconds, and Wingthirds. Nominate whoever you want-- we'll sort out whether they want the position or not later. Volunteer for whatever you want-- we want people who WANT to do this, so don't be shy.
If you already have a Wingleader, please don't volunteer to have another one. If you have a Wingsecond, you may volunteer to have another Wingsecond or a Wingleader, though we'll give priority to those who don't have rankers. If you have a Wingthird, there are no restrictions. Also, you may ask for a promotion for an already-ranked character or an unranked character. (If you've got a Wingsecond who wants to move up in the world, for example, put him or her up for Wingleadership, or shove that ambitious Wingrider straight to the top.)
If you have a specific character in mind, please volunteer/nominate that one. Include
1.) player's name 2.) character's name 3.) character's age 4.) dragon's age 5.) dragon's color
If you DON'T have a specific character in mind, nominate/volunteer anyhow, and we'll see about getting a suitable character worked up.
Wingthird was not intended to be a permanent position, but an IC and OOC training ground for future leaders. We're thinking about rotating the current ones entirely, so nominate all of those you want.
A Wingleader is basically a miniature Weyrleader. Within their Wings, Wingleaders have scaled-down versions of the same powers and responsibilities that the Weyrleader has. In OOC terms, there are many Pern games out there which have fewer riders total than one Arolos Wing. We want people who have ideas and a reasonable amount of time to play with them, who won't have to run to the BoD to decide every issue. ICly, Wingrankers are responsible for dealing with problems before they get big enough and bad enough to reach the Weyrleader; OOCly, they're responsible for holding the hands of newbies and making sure that no one in their Wings feels left out of the game.
Remember that Arolos does not discriminate on the basis of dragon color. Every rank except Weyrleader and Weyrwoman is open to the full spectrum.
Please send replies to fishypoo@ ureach.com without the space. PLEASE DO NOT REPLY ON-LIST.

6:50 pm - Coming soon to a Weyr near you...
|
Okay folks, as always while you folks have been writing away, we've been foraging ahead to think up future plans. And the next one should make our Crafters perk their ears up as it involves them rather majorly:-)
As we all know, at every Hatching there's a fair amount of disappointed Candidates - even moreso this time with the sheer amount of Candidates versus the amount of eggs. And as some of those Camdidates may be rethinking what they do want to do when they grow up, we're giving them the opportunity to investigate it.
Think of it as a Careers Fair. A chance for the Weyr's Crafters to talk about what they do for a living to the Candidates as a group, and then to talk to them individually and perhaps claim a couple of new apprentices. And there'll be a place for those jobs not recpognised as official Crafts but nevertheless essential - Crecheworkers, cooks, laundryworkers and Guards for instance...
Now, we'll be starting the Fair after the Hatching, but the planning for it will begin long before. This is a chance for workers to get together and discuss how best to present their jobs, a chance for them to form little communities within the Weyr. Very active Crafts (Harpers, Weavers, and Healers I'm looking at you) will have a chance to gain new members, less active areas will have a chance to actually gain that community feeling.
So, why am I telling you now before the IC announcement has even been made? Well, its because if there's a Craft or work area you think is badly represented, or not represented at all in the Weyr, and would like to see more of this is your chance to see it take off. Feel free to apply with Journeymen Crafters, or workers now - and watch for the announcement on list when we're ready:-)

10:50 am - News and more news
|
**Been a while since the last update..why? because we've seen some of the highest post counts on all lists EVER**
So. The Eggs are hardening merrily on the sands (as they do) and the main event in terms of Arolos has been the build up and then finally arrival of the Midsummer Gather. This is a massive affair in the Arolos calender as it always seems like the entire population of the South (and portions of the North) have descend on Arolos Hold to spend spend spend! After the Famine, people have been particularly interested in replacing stock, and once the rains had worked their magic and there was fodder once more for them to eat, wild herdbeasts and livestock were brought in again.
So. The gather dawned and various excitements and attractions have be exicting great interest. People have hunted for bargains in the Junksale, have bought cunningly crafted wooden items, had tatoos, had evil fortunes told, visit the..um ...leather carfters at the blacked out caravan, tempted themselves with the outrageous expensive chocolate delicacies, won and lost on the Dragon roulette, bought new clothes and had Gather gown commissioned and numerous people have purchase wher and flit eggs from the renowned Callamere stall. All this and food, and entertainment besides.
So far, the Harper Open took place on the first IC day and was won by Analeah's "All my songs" - although it was a close run thing with K'ren and Torezu's "Broken Shadows" as the vote that tip the balance came in at the last moment:-)
The under 15's category was won by little Caeli, the weyrbrat and both of them have gone off with a Callamere goldflit egg (they don't SELL these - this is pretty much the only way to get them) for an extra special flit. Congratulations to them both!
The second IC day of the Gather had the Arolos Cup runner race which has just concluded. Everyone had a chance to look over the 10 runners and place a bet and then after a thrilling (i hope) race the winners came in as follows. FIRST- Harpers' Rumour (40-1) SECOND- Wildly-in-Love (100-1 rank outsider) THIRD - Silver CloudsDancing (20-1) FOURTH - Flies Between (3-1 favourite)
Red Star fell at the water jump...well fell IN the water jump. Patchy Luck threw a shoe whilst going into the lead and then fouled up the chances of Horizon Storm and Golden Sun Lady. Chocolate Kiss obviously wasn't in good enough condition to last the race and the feisty Son-of-a-wher was doing well but had to be pulled up lame after landing awkwardly after skewing to avoid Red Star. All very exciting.
Other events before/during and after the Gather. Due to RL we are losing one of our wirters and this has meant the hastily written departure, of Master Dan of the Harper Haven - there is a vacancy afoot for someone to be in charge here if you wish to apply!
Aslo AWLM P'ul and other characters who will be missed. How you get chance to come back and play someday again dear! *has confidence in the addictive properties of Arolos Water*
A young weyrling, Serena has died. As yet, causes unknown. There have been a couple of gruesome murders at the Gather which the authorities are looking into...OooooOOOoooo!
A new Healer has joined the Infirmary - Journeyman Lornal who is hoping his radical idea's don't get him into trouble at Arolos.Or his tast in hats. *g* Also I think we might literally just have acquired a Mindhealer.. lord knows we need one:-)
The Gather Dance at the weyr is about to begin to signal the end of the frivolities and then after that..well it'll be time for another Hatching! ARGH!
Please add any bits and pieces about your characters in the replies to this.. I know I missed some! Well..alot!

6:57 pm - Important Hatching Information
|
Well, Hatching's coming and there are always the same questions before them. So, I'm summing it all up in an FAQ for you, to make things clear.
When will this Clutch Hatch?
We're aiming for some time in April - probably around the middle or end of that month. There's no exact date set yet, but as soon as we do fix one we'll let you know.
When will the deadline for Candidates for this Hatching be?
Well, a Hatching in April means you need to allow the BoD some time to organise ;-) That means, if you haven't yet created a Candidate and you want a chance to Stand for the Hatching the very LATEST you can create your Candidate is Saturday 29th March. That's the Saturday after this one.
For clarification's sake, that's the last date you can *create* them. If you've created a Candidate but the BoD gets bogged down and it isn't approved by then - don't worry. It'll still count;-)
What do the writers of Candidates need to do?
Well, most importantly you need to make sure their profile is on the site. That's the database we'll be using. If you have a Candidate from BEFORE we switched to the database system, and you haven't yet added them in to the Whizzy Thing, please make sure you do that THIS week. (Newbies, you don't need to worry about that. Yours will automatically be in)
Secondly, and just as important you need to check your characters profile to make sure it has "Candidate" entered under "Character type:" If you are not sure whether or not yours does, go to http://arolosweyr.co.uk/arolos.php?p=persona2/login_main.php and log in to view all your character profiles.
If you've changed your email address since first using the database, please write to arolosooc-owner@yahoogroups.com with your characters names, and your present email address ASAP. We need to drop you a private email to make sure you and your characters are still around and while I'll make every attempt possible to track down valid email addresses if yours bounces, I really appreciate being told in advance to save my time.
At some point in the future (probably in two weeks or so) ALL Candidate writers will receive an email listing their present Candidates, and their colour prefs and with a list of questions. It is VITALLY IMPORTANT when you receive these that you answer ALL the questions and return them to us as soon as possible. Candidates who haven't replied by the date on the email will NOT even have a chance to Impress.
What will happen at the Hatching?
You will be informed in advance of the date and time of the Hatching (we even give it in different timezones - ain't we nice?) On the day, there'll most likely be a huge OOC party on AIM where people chat and hang out while they wait for Hatching to start.
The actual Hatching will be sent through the list in mails. If you Impress, you'll also receive a private email containing a description of your dragon, and your Weyrling Pack.
OMG, I can't be online at the time of the Hatching! I can't Impress! My life is over!
You do NOT have to be online at the time of the Hatching. As I stated, it will be sent through mail, so if you aren't online you can Impress when you get on. All Impressions are decided before the actual Hatching day, so whether you are online or not then will not be a factor.
How do I Impress?
It's a good combination of quality, activity, and downright good luck.
This is Arolos. There are always going to be more Candidates than Hatchlings. When looking over who should Impress, we look at a lot of things, including how much they've been writing lately, how WELL they've been writing and one more thing you can't affect - your Candidate's personality. All Arolos Hatchlings come with their own little personality and so the BoD devote significant amounts of time to matching them to Candidates who we think would gel well with them.
Hence, if you don't Impress, it doesn't mean we hate you. It doesn't mean we secretly crave your horrible death, or long for you to leave. It simply means there wasn't a dragon we thought fitted you this Clutch, and you need to wait for next time to Impress;-)
Having said that, being active DOES help. It means we have plenty of material to study in order to look at your characters personality, which helps a LOT.
Tell me if you think I'll Impress? Oh please? Tell me who'll Impress? You can tell me, it won't hurt...
No BoD is permitted to reveal details of who'll Impress, or even the colour proportions (how many bronzes etc) before the Hatch. Nagging a BoD therefore to try and worm it out of them, will result in nothing other than that BoD perhaps gaining a growing desire to kill you;-) Seriously folks, the time coming up to Hatchings tends to be a stressful time for us, which means we DO get short-tempered and stressy sometimes. I remember one particular Hatching where I ended up muttering death-threats about the next person to ask me a certain question. As soon as we can tell you anything, it'll go up on the list. Don't bug us for info before then and we'll love you ;-)
Where can I see the eggs?
http://www.darkfort.co.uk/Jenith4/index.html
How come you only have 14 eggs listed but onlist it says 18 were laid?
Vicky's already said this once, but repeating it won't hurt. The remaining four Eggs are NPC Eggs. They will Impress to NPCs allowing people to backdate characters to this Clutch in the future. For all intents and purposes, as far as you're concerned though, there are only 14 Eggs.
My Candidate needs to be Searched before the Hatching - how do I arrange it?
Either assume that an NPC's searched them, or write to arolosooc@yahoogroups.com to ask people to volunteer.
I have other questions you haven't answered. Who do I ask?
Drop a note to arolosooc-owner@yahoogroups.com and we'll get back to you. Please DON'T direct your questions to the OOC list, or to the BoD when they're using AIM. As stated, BoD get BUSY during Hatchings. Ask on OOC and they may miss it, ask on AIM and they may not have time to answer. Use the suggested channel - that's what it's for ;-)

1:21 pm - more news..
|
Good heavens, didn't realise it had been so long since the last update. Well..here we go. Congratulations to G'rett rider of brown Brenath, who is having to suspend his Dragonhealing to become weyrleader as his dragon successfully flew Jenith. This was actually sometime ago, so in fact the Clutch is about to be laid. Since then G'rett has been catching up on various things, talking to people in the weyr, rearranging the wings and appointing a new wing leader to a new wing. Heavens.
He's also spoken to the harpers and K'ren amongst others and authorised a generous initiative for the Weyr to stock the holder back up with breeding beasts from the Big herd. After all they won't be able to tithe if they have nothing to tithe with!
With the crops shooting up with the addition of rain and warm sunshine, the Lord Holder of Arolos Hold - Lord Prental has sent out information to all the Holds informing them there will be a Midsummer Gather this year and there are frantic preparations afoot in readiness.
In other news, Goldrider Wygelle is still researching her essay on Religh the Renegade - and in the mean time struck it off quite well with J'shar. It may have been the impetus for her to finally break things off with T'rifoshe whom she had been weyrmated. T'ilson has woken from his coma, and is starting to get restless in the Infirmary. There is some talk of him becoming a Weyrling and Candidate counseller whilst his physical fitness returns.
Deyar, the friendly neighbourhood Redstar is still making a habit of rescuing small children - the latest being a young lad beaten over his dog. Almost frequently enough to be suspect about it! But an incident at home - yes, even Redstars have home lives- has prompted him to apprentice his young son Delyrn to the Weyrguard, rather than have him follow him blindly into organised crime.
K'ren is currently taking Jyme and Artemus out to the Big Herd to select some prime stock for the weyrherd;R'tal is entertaining Rexana who is thinking of HIM as prime stock at the moment. Greenrider P're is suffering a near breakdown following the death of his long time friend A'day, and he has nearly ended up going back to Fort - which would be suicide for him as a known defector to Arolos. This is partly due to I'tess...but nobody knows that...(OoooOOo)
The Harper Haven has been ratified as a separate Harper Hall (rather than just an extention of the weyrharpers) and Master Dan made Masterharper in charge. There was a walking the tables ceremony where a whole host of the apprentices who had been training hard had their rank as journeymen and women, formally recognised - such as Journeywoman Valeryna, and D'ron. The Mastery's of Severus, Brendan and Dan were confirmed by the Masterharper himself who managed to get there with sapphire rings to do the deed.
that's all I can think of right now - sure I've missed loads so please add on you additional plots and news in the replies or send it to the BoD addy to be put up as a separate entry!

2:38 pm - Rain Rain...whee!
|
Well..on a totally auspicious day in Arolos it rained. What's so interesting about that I hear you ask? Well it hasn't rained for over a year and people have been dying of starvation and the effects of the drought.
Of course when the rains arrived, they arrived big time and the rogue seacaptain Jezechs managed to send a brief warning to Artemus at the weyr. Artemus duly spread the word around resulting in many dragonriders spreading the word that a storm was due to hit in the not to distant future. Well. K'ren was still worried and begged Deyar the Redstar to help him warn the Holds. The pair of them set off on the hop and jump around the region. They did it, but despite a close encounter with a falling tree the pair of them STILL don't get on at all, and it ended up with K'ren sending DEyar off to get checked over before he lost his temper. Which ended in a very peeved Deyar lodging a formal complaint against Misika, another Healer.
Meanwhile the storm is raging outside.(whilst in DarkFort they are getting their first taste in sunshine for a while). The Weyrlings old and new are dealing with their dragons first reactions to rain...ranging from the suprised to the horrified.
Beladona, the dragonless weyrling has become convinced that Brownie the Hatching Sands Wher is her lost dragon Senbuuth in the middle of the storm.
In the Infirmary, Gr'dil, the sick weyrling who had a bad infection and nearly died has woken up finally.
Likewise, T'ilson, injured on the night of the Hatching and who has been comatose since, has shown the first signs of recovery, briefly coming around and now in normal sleep.
Torezu is still making his way through all and sundry that he can find, sketching and...well other things! He is starting to dabble in politics now so lord help us.
A mysterious note seems to have been carelessly left around with plans on how to topple the weyr in the Harper Haven. On the whole it's probably not a definite intention but our friendly neighbourhood Redstar is probably making a point. Even if he get gently told off for being a little TOO enthusiastic by his boss, Zhak.
There have been a variety of greenflights and even green flit flights too! (one in progress as we speak)but the goldflight for the weyrleadership still continues as the write of the gold was inexplicably snowed in away from her computer for the best part of a week.! Should be wrapping up soon! Yey!
Same as ever. - any comments or additions, put them in the replies!

3:49 pm - more updates
|
Once more on the updates..once more! Well since the Hatching what has happened in the busy wotsits of Arolos?
Well, there have been a whole load of Trainee Assistant Weyrling Masters descend upon Arolos in response to the crisis presented by T'ilson injury.
K'ren has signed off B'lin to partial duties, to help train the TAWLMs and things have been settling in well. He also chucked Artemus out of the Infirmary as well much to the entertainers relief.
Deyar of the Redstars has been stirring again, fomenting discord and resentment, and also going as far as to demand reparations from the weyr and R'mal for the raid! The cheek of it.
The prolonged famine finally took it's toll and in one of the threadfalls the wing flew resulted in heavy casualties and some fatalities. R'mal was not happy with this situation at all and has suggest to R'tal that Firedance wing needs to train harder - which has upset the Weyrsecond
Senior Queen Jenith has risen and the Weyrleader flight is in progress - still awaiting the winner there.
After this...due to the glories of Arolos Fuzzy Time, the heroic group of scouts tracking down elusive leads in the jungle finally discovered the Herdbeasts that had become so elusive due to the drought. They were hidden in a isolated rift valley with water being supplied by the mountains. In the nick of time too! The situation was looking bleak. But the weyr is only just getting the news spread around..but word will be out soon.
In totally random news, Torezu the dragonless artist now appears to have one distinct aim in life - to sleep with everyone he has met. He's doing pretty well so far, though on occassion he does stick to the sketching and drawing he has been commission. He's also met Jezechs, the seacaptain, who apparently bears an uncanny resemblance to his dead love M'rild. Yes he slept with him too.
Goldrider Kassia has been at the bedside of the comatose T'ilson and letting herself go to rack an ruin. This prompted a rather acrimonious discussion with K'ren but that was eventually resolved. However, she has since flipped out at Serena and thrown a knife in a door next to her to see her off...creating uproar! B'lin and Laranna have been called in to discuss things.
There have been a few new arrivals in the infirmary as well to give relief to the Healer staff! (I'll let them add the character names if they wish!)and more Candidates are starting a steady trickle in now the Hatching is over and many of them Impressed.
That's it for now. PLEASE fill in any additions or updates to the replies - any of your own news as these are only the threads I can remember off the top of my head!

Well, lots has happened since the last update. I'm bound to miss some so feel free to post additions in replies :-) On the Admin front, I have finally updated the Arolos Timeline, woohoo. Thankyou to everyone who has contributed. If you want something put in please just email it to the Bod addy.
Okay, to continue. Deyar of the Redstars has been ingratiating himself with the Holders left, right and centre. All of a sudden there is food on the market to be had showing that whatever was liberated from those stores by the weyr was the tip of the iceberg.
The Weyrleader and Weyrsecond were furious with the raid and the weyr got to know that. Demotions and discipline all round for those involved but as Deyar kept saying, that didn't help those who were hurt and died. Yes.. a poor NPC called Kehne died falling from his horse trying to escape. (If only for the reason that the BoD wanted someone to shout "Oh dear Faranth, they killed Kehne! The Bastards!")
Severus, using skills from his..um ..lifestyle choices managed to free himself and did not need ransoming after all. But the camp of disgruntled cotholders still remain, though with some food coming in people are losing their fire.
Then of course there has been the Hatching, the Hatching of the Sandstormers weyrlings. (Named because of their over protective sire and dam burying Eggs a little too deeply in sand.) Impressions were occurring all over the place and everything was looking good and fantastic...up until the last Egg. Despite K'ren yelling a warning too late, and despite T'ilson trying to stop it happening, a Candidate - Beladona, the one everyone loved to hate, managed to accidentally crack and impress the deformed hatchling...well lets be honest, it was just a head really, just before it died. The trauma sent a lot of people into shock and marred an otherwise wonderful Hatching (Though preserved the Arolos BoD's reputation)
HAving got drunk, like many Dragonriders, I'von tripped and fell down some stairs, breaking his neck and dying senselessly - if only to prove that people do someimes die in meaningless ways
WLM T'ilson was so upset that after he had done the duty to dispose of the deformed creature and returned to the weyr, he wasn't wearing his flying straps so when Breteth rose back on his hauches to keen the death of I'vons dragon, he was thrown and suffered a head injury. He is currently in the Infirmary in a coma.
This left the weyr short on WLM staff, and it has initiated a massive drive to train up a group of AWLMs. With B'lin back on light duties, he is helping to train up half a dozen or so trainees who are helping out at the moment.
Also, a big MASSIVE herd of herdbeast has been spoted. The scouts believe they may have found the main migration of the animals, that so mysteriously vanished during the drought and famine. News is on it's way back to the wey.
And that's all I can think of right now...please add in replies to this post!

4:07 pm - Plot updates and all..
|
*pokes some of the others to do these too*
Well...the Hatching is pending and the situation has been getting desparate. Everyone seems to know that there is not enough food for the hatchlings-to-be and tensions have been high. So when there the mysterious letter tell of the Redstar Hoard of food and give indications of WHERE and when and how...well, those informed react very quickly.
At the moment however it would appear that not everyone has been informed. There are certain people ommitted from that list and a fair few people think that it is a trap. Nevertheless, A'dan and a group of raider have set off and found a rather obvious looking base, surrounded by a massive fair of ravenous wild flits. *Looks nervous*
They launched into an attack and rather surisingly, the "Redstars" have put up very little of their rather renowned resistance. The raid is still in progress....and weyr hopes they find enough food to help the Hatchlings survive.
At the same time, the starving refugees camped out on the fringes of the Hold and on Weyr land heard tell of the Weyr raiding and have decided to adopt desperate measures to get some food for the remnants of their families. Thus it was that Master Harper Severus has been detained on his way back from picking up a load of seasoned wood for his craft, and is currently their hostage-guest. The people involved know this is a dangerous thing they are doing but they really feel they have little choice and sent a note to the weyr to "ransom " him...and advising them that anyone on that road will join him. They are collecting a group of weyrfolk to bargain with. So far they are being treated well - but as things get more desperate...who knows. Severus' weyrmate, Hari is rushing off to rescue him...and the Harpers are putting a little more thought into it and following on.
In other news - K'ren has discovered that the reason for T'ilson and Roahn's rather odd behaviour (in that they compulsively sleep with each other if they come in contact with each other) appears to be a by-product of the extreme environmental conditions of the famine resulting in Klarath exerting an "emergency bond" with Breteth, to ensure she and her CLutch survive the lean times. This was discovered when a dragon effected T'ilson finally had an argument with Weyrsecond R'tal about the extreme response to Candidates trying to see the Eggs. Breteth and Klarath were NOT happy and have nigh on buried the Eggs to keep everyones hands off of them! . K'ren took it upon himself to intervene and was able to confirm that it wasn't entirely the riders fault - by having a similar reaction himself. This means that T'ilson retracted his threatened resignation...phew!
R'tal has...with Talith sensing the nearing Weyrleader flight, had to put up with Talith chasing greens practically every other day. He has as a result become a bit nitpicky and controlling and has even gone as far to alter K'rens schedules without telling him. Shocking but true!
Sh'tell has come around from his injuries and is please to here he will walk again but not so pleased that he wouln't be flying for at least 6 weeks.
Young entrepreneur Alvinn has caused havoc with his...er..pillowcrafting scheme of matching up Candidates with people to relieve them of their ..um virginity and then taking their marks and profiting out of it. He has had a tongue lashing by the Candidate Master but still doesn't see why it was wrong as they didn't HAVE to use the service.
K'ren was approached by a bold Redstar - one of their main front men called Deyar, who has offered to supply him healing supplies. As the Healer Hall has requisitioned most of their supplies for the north, leaving them with hardly any, K'ren is reluctantly going to have to take the deal, but is already planning how to use that connection to them as they will be using it to him.
Mysteriously, the Redstars, again at odds with their reputation, seem to be helping out beleaguered Cotholders in the South...but who knows what their motives could be?

3:56 pm - Updates and all
|
Well first of all in case you missed it heres the Admin side. 1. The Wizzy Thing is back up and running now now we have moved to our new server (the other one blew up...sniffle, hence the various issues we had with it and the database. All fixed thanks to the technical talents of Matt our techie who was bribed with beer and chocolate and then emotional blackmail to sort it. So if you did have any persona's through during that time, please make sure you put them in. The webpage updates from the database and if they ain't in there , they won't be on the webpage. Simple as that!
2. Hatching letters have gone out. Respond swiftly if you haven't done so because the BoD will be doing the necessary admin soon and if you aren't on the list...well...need I say more? (I'm sure you all have anyway:-)
And now for a quick plotting round up....or the bits I know:-) The Everrash epidemic seemed to have been contained and people are recovering. Just after this another batch of letters came from the mysterious Redstars defector telling the weyr they would lose their chance if they didn't act swiftly. And THEN a follow up note to several of the key people that implied their traitor had been dealt with and for them to pretend it never happened...and rather gruesomely the severed head of a flit was used to punctuated the seriousness of this message. A'dan and others are looking into this and specualtion is rife about whether it is a trap or not. Looks like a raid might be in the offing. K'ren has been to see the weyrleader about the verified information (post soon to be released)
Unseen and behind the scenes, greenrider T'lack has fallen afoul of a private vendetta against him by Masena, Weyrwoman of Fort. The mother of his son came and fetched Taldar and then used him as a means to blackmail T'lack into coming to Fort - where he went accompanied by Sherina. Not such a good move as the intention were definitely bad. However, K'dar, T'lacks weyrmate when he returned from hunting discovered his absence and has essentially forced K'ren to come with him on a punitive rescue mission, his reasoning being if they make it political T'lack will be dead. Currently they are in the process of locating the missing riders... R'tal is having a belated daddy moment and coping with his son Rylen in one of his peaceful moments.
The Searchers are doing a grand job and more and more Candidates are coming into the weyr. Also a new Candidate Assistant as well :-)
And...that's all I can remember right now. Please add any other plotlines as replies - or clarifications!

11:18 am - More from Arolos...
|
*Even though Laura was meant to be doing some of this... thwaps Laura*
Okay, we've had some significant developments over the last few weeks. I'll try and remember some of them but then it's down to my fellows to fill in the gaps. 1. We've had an out break of Everrash in one of the Weyrling Classes. For those of you who don't know Everrash is a meningitis like disease that has two variants, one contagious and one not. And the contagious one is very dangerous without treatment. Fortunately, the last time there was Everrash appeared, weyrhealer K'ren survived it by discovering in old records about serums. Though he got the disease he survived so he has been ablse to make a vaccine out of his blood and we are hoping that Serena - patient zero in this instance is going to survive...and T'omi as well and that the others were innoculated in tiem. Three days in quarantine for them all and K'ren not happy because he has to burn his trousers and shirt!
2. B'lin and Artemus are creating havoc in the Infirmary. The pair of them are still arguing and there has just been an incident where Quelenth, B'lins dragon rose to chase in a greenflight. Ahem. Say no more.
3. A major incident occur in that Jyme, Artemus' partner, having been informed of Artemus condition went off on a private mission of revenge. To put it succintly, he found Captain Jezechs and managed to discover the information out of him there the rumours were true, there WAS a store of food in the south. He was also given the location of the local Redstars cothold , that contained the men responsible for nearly killing Artemus. Jyme went off after them, revenge on his mind, but managed to obtain the name Damfino before his conflict degenerated into a moonlit battle on the roof of the cothold. With skill and a fair amount of luck he managed to despatch all of them before limping...literally ...back to the weyr. There he was treated by K'ren and passed along the information.
4. In a strange twist, letters from a disillusioned Redstar have appeared scatter around the weyr indicating where this store of food might be. Is it a trap...or is this a genuine act of contrition? The word is out and buzzing around the weyr and soon they will have to take action. The HAtching is not that far away.
5. In a minor incident, some young lads were getting a little too friendly with a female candidate Joanya, and when Weyrsecond R'tal intervened, a stone thrown at him resulted in a concussion. K'ren turned up and was uncharqateristically terse about the whole thing and has handed them over to Weyrguard Zee to be dealt with whilst he helps his weyrmate recover from concusssion (R'tal being particularly pathetic when he is not well)
6. The Prehatching healthchecks have been going on, and there have been one or two possible problems including an unplanned pregnancy and possible evidence of emotional trauma that might be bad enough to keep them from the sands
7. Apparently someone has touched the Eggs - and Breteth, the sire is not happy at all bless him. Last seen trying to hide the eggs from nasty pokey candidates :-)
and thats all for now...if you have any story lines of you own, put them in as a reply to this huh? *g* Vicky

10:41 pm - This Week on Arolos..
|
Well the bits I've seen have mainly been from underneath piles of persona's and admin *drowns in a sea of paperwork...argh..*
We've got some greenflights underway for those feeling a little frisky - still time to join in!(Twilith and Cesareth) There have been rumours leaking of the food that the Redstars might have...people getting interested at least! A confrontation at Arolos Hold cotholds with some interloping raiders... Damfino of the Redstars being informed that the information is out...(oh hey, I think I have to post that one) The injured Artemus and sick WLM B'lin have struck up a strange sort of friendship, where they tease, laugh, shout get infuriated and alternately seem to shock, like or hate each other. At this rate they'll be married before you know it and Jyme who has gone off on a wander looking for mor information may have to sort them both out. The Weyrling training is continuing and T'ilson now acting WLM has acquired a new trainee AWLM in Vaviel. In the not to distant future (when I have collated the post) K'ren will be taking the statement he is getting from Artemus to the Weyrleaders...to see if we can find this lifesaving store of food! Watch this space.

2:45 pm - Dark Fort Wizzy Thing!
|
Well...not only did the Dark fort site get put into php format (thanks Kat! *smooches*) and gain a splash page with a hurridly created pictures *waits for people to smooch me to no avail* but as of...er... a couple of nights ago, it has it's own Wizzy Thing! *gives Mandy a coveted BCB!*
For those of you who missed the excitment over at Arolos - The Wizzy thing is a persona database which will help us update the site immediately...AND allow a writer to keep their own persona's updated without having to wait for the BoD
In case you missed it here are the instructions Go to the website. (darkfort webby) look at the left hand side for character creation.
If you have signed in at Arolos, use your user name etc here as well. If not, use New User link. Fill in the form thing. You are then registered. Hurrah! When you sign in you are taken to a area that gives you the option to add new characters. Please enter in your persona details and send it in. Repeat for all persona's. After the BoD approve them into the database, you will notice you are able to have an edit option on your persona's to keep them updated and tidy.
Once they are all in, owing to the marvels of databasing and Wizzy things, when we connect them up to the character pages they will automatically populate them to the wings, to the persona types etc. Yey!
From this point onwards, new characters will be updated as part of the approval process so hopefully after this point, things will be kept up to date. (and with Dark Fort, it won't be as difficult to get a good base of characters to base on. ) Let us know if you have misplaced a persona sheet and we will fish it out for you to put in, as it has to go against your user ID so it belongs to you :-)
Off you go then! *shoos* Fill it in please!

10:52 am - More Plotingness
|
Well... who would have thought it hey? The Famine continues and the whispher is out that there might not be enough food left to feed the next clutch of Hatchlings and the weyrfolk. What do you do? Let the Hatchlings die? Impress poor Candidates to them with the strong possibility they may become dragonless? Currently the Candidates are pondering this dilema and the radical suggestion that they might want to get rid of pets that are using up valuable food. (oo the controversy!)
However, it turns out that at the Dragon's Maw - the Tavern Cothold on the dockside of Arolos Bay a member of the Redstars (our Pernese organised crime) has had a little too much drink on an empty stomach and has blabbed rather loudly that there is a hoard of food around. Artemus - a freelance entertainer and professional Sneak based up at the Weyr, was there and managed to coerce some more information out of him before the pair of them were set upon by some other Redstars eager to stop the blabbing. The unfortunate NPC was bludgeoned to death, and Artemus left for dead, though he has made it back to the weyr despite his injuries and was worked on by the Infirmary Team. On regaining consciousness he has managed to tantilise K'ren with a little bit of the knowledge he gleaned before he had to rest again.
In other news, the stress and strain has told on WLM B'lin. He collapsed and has been signed off from work by K'ren, to prevent him having a stroke or an aneurysm. All Weyrling matters are being passed to the AWLM's T'ilson and P'ul and there maybe scope for more AWLM's to be recruited to help as well!

9:05 pm - Famine update
|
OOC:- General back ground info
And so the Famine continued. Drought was well and truly set in, the ground baked as hard as stone and cracked like badly baked pottery and just as hostile to crowing things as it was. Even the drought resiliant crops were struggling now, and at the weyr it was only the efforts of the dragonriders that enabled anything to survive at all with their water drops and replenishing of ice and water for the weyr on a daily basis.
Elsewhere the Holds were not so lucky. People had started to perish due to malnourishment and things became increasingly paranoid and primal. Everyone who had food was trying to fend off those who didn't. For each cothold that clung onto survival, there was another that had gone holdless in desperation, trying to find a place that had some food ...anywhere! Travelling was dangerous nowadays. Even if you were riding you risked ambush for the meat on your runner. Some would say that it was not all ravenous felines that caused messengers to disappear..
Dark rumours abounded under the opressive heat of the sun. Stories of the empty cotholds and the apparent swarms of flits spread and grew, meaning that many Holds would not accept flits as messengers just in case there was truth to the rumours. Many owners found their flits going wild as they could no longer feed them and this just inflated the stories as tame flits tried to pilfer from holds, recognising them as sources of food.
More problematically, dragonriders were seen often flying overhead, sometimes with a scrawny herdbeast in their talons - a beast that might feed family and bring them back into life for weeks. How were the Holderfolk to realise not ALL of them went to their own weyr? That some of those riders were in fact from an equally desperate north? That didn't help with the resentment and an equally false view was building up that the weyr had stores of food that they weren't willing to share....

3:19 pm - The Whizzy Thing!
|
Now, you Arolos Members out there will have seen the launch of Whizzy Thing. For those of you who weren't there, it's a persona database dohicky, created by one of our talented members (I'm trying to encourage her to patent it as I think there are a lot of RPG places out there that would fall down and worship her for it if they had it)
This is a reminder - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE sign in with a username and password at the very least. This means if I ever work out how to run the mySQL and admin thing, we might be able to start helping people out getting existing persona's up on the site.
We're doing pretty well so far but before we hook up the pages we would like a fair portion of the Arolos characters up on site.
Dark Fort members...you have a little while longer to wait. As ever we'll sort the bugs out and then hopefully it will be much less painful for you guys when we implement this over there. Just don't lose those persona sheets! save them and have them tidy :-)
As I said, what this will do is allow updating of the website as part of the Approval process - and allow members to have access to their own characters so they can update them over the web. There are other advantages as well but those are the primary ones. As we recognise our main failing to be not being able to update the website swift enough, this will, with any luck address that one principle problem that I know infuriates people. But to do it we need your help! So off you go... update your characters and get them in!
Thanks Vicky

3:18 pm - For Shirley..Update!
|
As she couldn't get in to update :-) Yes, I'm doing an Arolos Update over here because for some odd reason I can't log on to the Arolos site... *sigh*
Let's see...
In my little world of Pern, Dorena has been rescued! Let's hear it for all the wonderful rescuers. M'tew, K'ren, Zee, Klaus, P'ctru, Night, Anya, J'vin, and others...
In that daring rescue a few people were injured. Klaus took a knife to the throat which barely missed his windpipe. M'tew was shot with a crossbow bolt in his upper chest. Zee was pulled upside-down in a rope trap and suffer a broken ankle for his efforts. P'ctru was impaled by several spikes in a ground trap and of course there were more injuries- mostly minor.
Can you believe it...all K'ren received during this little battle was a knot on his head! Farrie, was another rescuer who helped get Sprecan and his baby back to the Weyr as well as bringing healers and supplies to the Island. Let's hear it for Farrie!
As of this moment, Klaus has had the knife successfully removed from his throat. M'tew is in surgery. P'ctru is still being extracted from the trap. Zee, I believe has been taken down from his snare, though where he ended up I'm not quite sure.
J'vin, though unhurt was unfortunate enough to have his dragon injured. It would seem, the half-drugged Psechinth took a bite out of the draggie's shoulder :( Poor, poor, Taneth) Good thing a dragonhealer was brought out to the Island!
As for A'tod, well, the unlucky devil had the misfortune of being injured by Klaus, right before A'tod got off his little knife to the throat throw. Falling, A'tod hit his head, (can we all give a great big 'AWwwwwww') and was knocked unconscious.
Now, after K'ren finished with Klaus, the kind soul couldn't just leave A'tod to die...he had to go help him and for his efforts he received a knot on the head when A'tod decided he didn't want to be captive.
Trying to escape, A'tod was hunted down by I'rastil who vowed to kill him for Dorena and their child. In a quandry because dragonmen are not supposed to 'kill' I'rastil challenged the weakened A'tod to a duel. Accepting the duel...A'tod was then dispatched neatly over a cliff and into the sea.
Seconds later, Psechinth betweened forever!
Thus ends the A'tod saga.
However, the scars he left behind are many and Ariella is still suffering the injuries inflicted upon her by him a month ago. Still blind, the young mother struggles to bond with her son.
That same son, Dorena nursed for a full month keeping him alive and safe and the poor Harper Haven Headwoman is finding it very hard to come to terms with her sudden baby loss. Irador is alive and happy, but the slightly demented woman thinks she has two babies. After an slight altercation in Areilla's room over Spriel, Dorena was taken back to the Infirmary where hopefully she'll be treated for this slight mental disorder. Physically the poor abused young woman is healing rather nicely.
Now, let's see what is going on elsewhere...
T'ilson sent the Mistseeker sweepriders out and every single one of them *coff* returned with a wonderful report...okay, so the report itself wasn't wonderful but the way they conducted the sweep ride and subsequently wrote the written report was done beautifully. The contents of the reports were very discouraging. The famine is wrecking havoc with the holds and halls around Arolos. T'ilson is discussing these reports with the Weyrleader as we speak.
Poor Leecoun hasn't been too busy lately, well...outwardly. Unseen, he's hiding behind closed doors with Duvin and Nagto wiling away the time in a very pleasurable manner.
Glorya has been busy welcoming new Candidates to Arolos. She also helped Glynnora bring her runner from home. The Candidate was quite happy.
Greenrider Renada has been seen in the presence of a certain Weyr Cobbler who has promised to get some cold water for the rider's swollen feet. She's due next month to deliver their child and it can't come soon enough!
Stryka...oh...poor, poor Stryka, the ACM gave birth to her twins the same day M'tew was injured with the crossbow. M'tew came running to her rescue, well he flew between with is injury just to be with her and helped deliver the first baby before passing out. Becca and Berease came and both started tended the wounded, with Candidate Stasia's help.
Becca hurriedly delivered Stryka's second child, a tiny baby girl who was breech. The baby came out with the cord wrapped around her neck and wasn't breathing. Becca helped her to breath again but she's never fully recovered and is still struggling to live. Stryka is fighting to recover from the birthing while trying to hear M'tew's last words before surgery. The poor woman needs a few hands to hold.
On to a bit lighter subject, Tyvoli, Wygelle's younger brother, was carted off to the lower caverns by J'kon where he was given some very potent ale. Needless to say he was drunk fairly quickly having never been an ale drinker before. Quite loudly he declared his love for Ianie and was told by J'kon to let her know. J'kon called Ianie through the dragons and Tyvoli staggered out to tell Ianie of his love and fell flat on his face passed out drunk! Poor, poor boy.
On the hatching sands Breteth is helping Klarath guard the eggs and he is being very possessive. Too many HUNGRY people around those eggs.
Sherina is trying to seduce A'dan to no avail, though she might learn a thing or two about writing reports.
Halifath is proud of his Snake catch and when it was determined to be edible...all the Candidates were taken to the Dining Hall to begin Snake filleting.
Poor Beladona was very ill at the thought of slicing and dicing the snake and Joanya swears she sees something alive inside the beastie.
Elsewhere, (another day of course) Beladona was engaging in a pleasure sport with her very good friend Jalisco. Unfortunately they chose the bathing chamber where Joanya walked in on them!!! Poor traumatized Joanya.
And then there is Hari, who is escorting the very besotted Palana back to her quarters with Severus. Did you know Palana thinks Dan has a very 'cute'?
In the Infirmary, A'tran is trying to comfort his love, Haidana, who has a secondary infection brought on my her deteriorating health due to the Famine. She might miscarry...poor thing. : (
Also, Becca is trying to comfort the poor J'mich, who freaked out and left the weyrling wing as they were fighting thread for the first time. Poor J'mich, he is *so* upset!
Now, I'm not sure...but I think that's it for recent activity. I feel like I'm missing things though....
Oh, yeah! Lady Catalenia had a terrible row with Lord Nikolai and is really fed up with the way her servants are behaving. She's also fed up with the sub-standard food they've been given for their meals. She is ready to revolt!
And Greyed, the little nine turn old hold boy has killed and eaten one of Durell's dogs! The beastcrafter is attempting to make him an apprentice of hers before he steals one of her runners and eats it!
Okay....that's enough for now. I'm sure I'll have more to say soon. :D "
Hurrah for Shirleys up dates!

8:47 pm - More random updates..
|
Well lets see. What has been happening in the world of Arolos? There appears to be a spate of babies being born recently and candidates arriving. Welcome to all of those. The weyr is scraping by but evidence that the famine is getting worse. A wild firelizard fair raided the Dining hall in search of food, and even more sinister, R'tals wing, whilst out on foraging duties founf a totally abandoned Hold. Strangely empty...there were bones there...but no sign of the people. The Horror story continued apace until it was discovered that the culprits was a massive fair of incredibly hungry firelizards, as hungry as if they had come out of the shell...and not only were they hungry but they had one solitary clutch hatching. Currently, the dragoriders are beathing a hasty retreat..
Also in Fuzzy time, the proposed rescue of Dorena is moving on apace. Klaus group of non riders have been dropped off in the rough terrain behind the cothold where they are being kept, and K'ren and the dragonrider volunteers have swung round to make a more frontal assault....and hopefully distract A'tod enough. Mmmmmm...we can only hopew that I'rastil doesn't get wind of where they are because he has been excluded from this mission on the basis that he and Sprecan are too involved to raid properly..*coff*
I think that's it for now... Evening Glories are apparently due to graduate soon:-) Look out for that everyone.

10:47 pm - DarkFort Shinies and Rank announcement
|
As sent to the list just now
"At the risk of sounding cliched, deciding amongst the persona sheets was REALLY hard. They were all excellent and there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth in the decision making (speacial thanks to Deanna who did a lot of the running around behind the scenes for us all *have a BCB Deanna hon*). I have to admit I don't think we anticipated quite such a response and I will say this...those who did apply this time and did not get a response, we will definitely welcome you applying again when we open up the next golds position...or expand to other ranking wings. When it came down to it, a lot of the decision were made on what interesting combinations of personality type we could come up with that contrasted and would spark off of other existing personalities in the weyr. As it stands, we have opened up a few ranking positions that we were holding onto to exploit the excellent persona's that came in
So, after all that blurb, here are the results *coffs..opens Shiny envelope though everyone has been sent an email privately*
Laurie's Kamma as junior weyrwoman (as she's away for a day or so this may surprise her )
Pooki's Cadli as junior weyrwoman
(yes two juniors - that was the minimum we could winnow it down to out of the large amount of applicants!)
Marina's K'met as Weyrleader
Heather's T'kai as Weyrsecond
Mandy to write up a persona for Dirma the retired goldrider
Ang's persona as Headwoman Lesly
Vix's G'dral, as Wingleader of the second Wing.
And to think this started out being about one goldrider and the Weyrleader huh? Congratulations, to everyone and thankyou for your patience as we worked this on out. And for everyone else who applied - don't bin those persona sheets. Let this lot settle in and you never know...;-)
Many Thanks Vicky- Heyoka's Admin and Arolos BoD "
There wasn't that nice "I'd like to thank my fellow BoD who made this all possible....and my mother...and my hairdresser.....and my next door neighbours cousin Bob..."
current mood: accomplished

I don't want to go to work tomorrow! Wah! Enough whining... Lets see any relevant plot bit that I have noticed? Well.. let me see, K'ren has delivered a baby (lili and Berease's son), is scouting A'tods position, is interviewing Aldorus *coff* to see if he is suitable for Severus. All this at the same time...*snigger*
The Masterharper, having dropped into the weyr on the pretext of getting a preview of Severus' Mastery project has warned Dan that the North seems to be in a worse state. He reckons there might be raids soon and that things are approaching critical mass up there. He also hinted that there should be more food than there appears to be. (various characters strive to look innocent)
Yes indeed the famine has been getting worse and worse... I think I might post some specific challenges about it *whistles* and very soon we will all be going hungry. Even with all the hunting going on there still isn't enough for the weyr...let alone the Holds.
Vicky - summarising
